Extremely well written.

i believe that you want to make sure there is no flames anywhere near this.

I am pretty sure this releases hydrogen gas as a by product. which is explosive. So the fan has a secondary purpose as well, to disperse the hydrogen gas.

this set up probably would produce very little gas, but even still, be safe.

its all a matter of scale. Someone did the math a while ago on another forum and figured that if it was in a contained system, running 24 hours, it would take aprox 5 days to create enough Hydrogen to ignite, if you could get the mix right. And at that, its just a little "poof" of flame, nothing close to explosive. You have more gas leaking from your stove actually. Your more likely to have issues with noxious fumes. Ventilation is recommended in any case :)

Well, I finally found the time to give this a try. I'm pretty happy with my first attempts. [link]

I found it went rather slow, though. Does using larger bolts for the negative poles work better? I know I need to rethink my positive pole. I was using an alligator clip, but after about an hour of use, the jaw not in contact with the bare metal had been completely eaten away. I think I'm going to tape my positive pole to the metal while I'm masking it.

Thanks for sharing this!

Etching speed is a bit of a black art. its a combination of the amount of surface area of the negative pole, the surface area you are etching, the amount of salt and the amount of power you are applying. A larger negative "bolt" as well as more power would help. increasing the salt content does not hurt either.

Th fan in the circuit is to prevent the power supply from drawing too much current and destroying itself. The salt water is basically creating a short. Its the same as twisting the wires directly together. You can try it, but there is a definite risk of burning out the power brick, so be careful.

Make sure your in a ventilated are if your doing anything larger than a few inches. This process can give off some nasty gas.

Thank you very much for the advice! I definitely plan on refining my setup, as I've found this to be a very interesting process. I appreciate the advice very much!

That was you? Lawlz.

Great tutorial. Something I might do with the like 20 spare tins I have (from a ps coupon experiment :D)

And about the engraver, atleast the small handheld ones do not come out nice and smooth and mostly even like this does.
